The Maritime Alps lily , also turban lily or red lily , ( Lilium pomponium ), is a species of the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the Candidum section .
description
The Maritime Alpine Lily is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 40 cm to 120 cm and is up to 25 cm wide, it is considered to be short-lived. The round onion has a diameter of 4 cm - 5 cm, it is composed of lanceolate creamy white scales.
The stem is hard, straight and dark, the leaves narrow, linear, with a silvery edge and arranged close to the stem.
The plant blooms in June and July in a panicle with one to five flowers (up to 15 in culture). The flowers consist of six petals bent backwards (like a Turk's collar). There are three crown- and three sepals , but look very similar. The color of the flowers varies from orange-red to scarlet with black dots. The anthers are brown, the pollen vermilion. The flower smells strong and unpleasant.
After blooming, the seeds ripen from August to September. The seed germinates epigeously , following a warm-cold-warm cycle (autumn-winter-spring) in which each period is about two months long. The plant then blooms for the first time after around three years.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
distribution
This lily occurs only in the Maritime Alps in France and Italy up to an altitude of 1600 m above sea level. It prefers a dry, very calcareous soil and needs direct sunlight, it is often found with hazelnut bushes . The Maritime Alpine Lily is considered endangered.
