Turgay Avcı

Turgay Avcı (* 1959 in Larnaka ) is a Turkish Cypriot politician.

Avcı graduated from Beirut in 1985 . He then worked in various positions at EMU ( Eastern Mediterranean University ) in Cyprus . In 2003 and 2005 Avcı was elected to the parliament of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for the conservative National Unity Party (UBP) . Until he left, he was also Secretary General of UBP.

In summer 2006 he left the UBP and formed his own political alliance, the Freedom and Reform Party (ÖRP). On September 25, 2006, Avcıs ÖRP and the majority faction in the Cyprus Turkish Parliament, the Republican-Turkish Party (CTP), formed a government alliance under Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer (CTP). Avcı became Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. On May 5th, 2009 he was replaced by Hüseyin Özgürgün .

Avcı is married with two children and speaks English , Arabic and Italian in addition to his Turkish mother tongue .
