The Turmhof is a structural landmark of the Swiss community of Steckborn TG. The historic building directly on the Untersee houses the museum in the tower courtyard. It is considered a cultural asset of national importance .

history

The tower courtyard in Steckborn was built in 1282 by Albrecht von Ramstein, abbot of the Reichenau monastery . As an abbot's apartment, the tower was not subject to the city rules; he was free of taxes and customs duties and had the right of asylum, ie every criminal or persecuted person who reached the always open gate was allowed to stay undisturbed for six weeks and three days.

The building was first mentioned in documents in 1371 when it was pledged and sold to a citizen of Constance. Many other changes of ownership followed. In 1639 the community of Steckborn acquired it and used the premises first as a poor labor institution, then as a schoolhouse and for poor shelters. In 1902 the community donated the building to the Protestant parish, which in 2002 sold it to the "Stiftung Turmhof".

In 1937 the museum was opened under the direction of the Heimatvereinigung. In 2002, the “Turmhof Foundation” was established with a legacy with the aim of maintaining and managing the property. This soon led to major conflicts with the museum and other parties involved, as well as the legacies. After this dispute could be settled, a conversion with renovation was started in 2017. The museum reopened in August 2018.

collection

The museum in the Turmhof shows the culture and history of the submarine area. The exhibition includes prehistoric finds, among others from the Neolithic (Turgi and Schanz -Steckborn and Insel Werd ), the Roman period ( Eschenz ( Tasgetium )) and the Alemanni ( Ermatingen , Steckborn). Particular emphasis is placed on the Steckborn furnace construction and lace making . There is also a picture show by artists from Steckborn. An early medieval disc brooch , which is on display in the museum, was depicted on a Pro Patria stamp of the Swiss Post in 2015 . A museum cinema for multimedia videos (for existing exhibitions) is established on the 3rd floor.
