( EA Smith , 1877)

Turricula nelliae ( original combination : Pleurotoma nelliae ) is a snail from the family of the leg worm , which in the Indo-Pacific is widespread and polychaete (Polychaeta) eats.

features

Turricula nelliae spuria (Hedley, 1922)

The spindle-shaped to tower-shaped snail shell of Turricula nelliae with 12 highly hollowed passages at the top reaches a length of about 3 to 4 cm in adult snails. A series of upright, elongated tubercles run along the base, and two small keels run below the suture. The housing mouth together with the siphon channel takes up almost half of the housing length. The anterior canal is straight, the siphonal canal a little crooked and curved backwards. The upper part of the thin outer lip of the case mouth is slightly cut.

distribution and habitat

Turricula nelliae is distributed in the Indo-Pacific from Pakistan , India and Sri Lanka via Indonesia to the Philippines , China , Japan and Australia ( Northern Territory , Queensland , Western Australia ). It lives below the intertidal zone down to a depth of about 30 m on muddy surfaces.

Development cycle

Like all leg snails , Turricula nelliae is of separate sexes. The Veliger larvae swim free before they sink and metamorphose into crawling snails .

nutrition

Turricula nelliae feeds on sedentary Vielborstern (Polychaeta), where Lagis koreni is one of the favorite prey animals and in studies in Hong Kong accounted for a quarter of all eaten animals, but also 15 other Polychaetenarten were eaten. The prey animals are stung with the help of the radula teeth and paralyzed by the snail's venom.
