Turritella is a genus of marine snails within the family of tower snails (Turritellidae).

features

The genus includes species with a tightly wound, pointed-high conical housing with numerous turns. The individual turns are convexly rounded and provided with spiral stripes. The foot is relatively small and the housing can be closed with an operculum .

Systematics

The genus Turritella was established by Lamarck in 1799. The type species is Turbo terebra Linné, 1758. The generic name was subsequently extended to almost all snails with tall tower-shaped shells. Today the genus is again taken in a very narrow definition. In addition to the nominate subgenus, the genus also includes the subgenus Torcula . Fossils of Turritella found in Central Europe since the Cretaceous . Precursors already existed in Devon . The genus produced numerous species , especially in the Cenozoic .

Fossil deposits

The Erminger Turritellenplatte near Ulm , named after a mass occurrence of fossil shells of Turritella turris , is an important site from the Burdigalium (Lower Neogene ). The sediments were deposited about 18.5 Ma ago in the northern Alpine Molasse Basin under shallow marine conditions near the coast.
