Tutu puoane (* 31 May 1979 in Atteridgeville as Nonthuthuzelo Puoane ) is a South African jazz singer .

Live and act

Puoane, who grew up in Mamelodi near Pretoria, began working as a professional musician in Johannesburg in 1997 . She first studied jazz singing at the University of Cape Town with Jelena Reveshin and Virginia Davids. Jack van Poll offered her to continue her studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag in 2002 , where Rachel Gould taught her.

In 2000 she toured internationally as a vocalist with the South African National Youth Big Band . In 2001 she performed with Tucan Tucan at the North Sea Jazz Festival Cape Town ; she also performed with Sibongile Khumalo . In 2007 she released her debut album Songs . Her quartet, which was partially expanded to a sextet, included her husband Ewout Pierreux Nicolas Thys and Lieven Venken. She has also worked in various programs with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra and toured with Marcus Wyatt . She also worked with Saxkartel, with Jasper van't Hofs Pili Pili , Tuur Florizoones MixTuur and with the Dutch Frits Bayens Big Band . She performed in many European countries, but also in North America.

Tutu Puoane settled in Europe in 2002, initially in the Netherlands . Since 2004 she has lived and worked in Antwerp .

Prizes and awards

In 2000 she won the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters in the Cape region. At the Daimler Chrysler South African Jazz Competition 2001 she received an honorary award as a promising young talent. In 2004 she received the Standard Bank's Young Artist of the Year Award for Music . For her album Quiet Now she received the 2010 South African Music Award for “best traditional jazz album”. The following year she won the same prize with the album Mama Africa, which was recorded together with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra .
