The Foreign Legion defended a French position at Tuyên Quang for four months against 12,000 members of the Yunnan and Black Flag Army during the Franco-Chinese War (August 1884 to April 1885). The siege of Tuyên Quang is still considered one of the most significant acts of the Foreign Legion and is therefore commemorated in the first verse of Le Boudin , the marching song of the Foreign Legion.

Tuyên Quang served as a garrison in Indochina, but it was captured by the Viet Minh during the First Indochina War .
