Twinkle (singer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Twinkle , actually Lynn Annette Ripley , (born July 15, 1948 in Surbiton , Surrey , England ; † May 21, 2015 on the Isle of Wight ) was a British pop singer and songwriter who was particularly successful in the mid-1960s.

Life

Twinkle's most successful songs were the British chart hits Terry and Golden Lights , which she wrote herself at the age of 17 and made it into the charts. Terry was thematically similar to Leader of the Pack from the Shangri-Las ; both songs were about a girl who mourned the death of her daring friend in a motorcycle accident. One of the session musicians when Terry was recording was Jimmy Page . In Germany was Terry in 1965 by Marion with German text on Polydor published, but without going into the German charts.

Twinkle's second hit, Golden Lights, was a song about her ex-boyfriend Declan Cluskey from the Bachelors . The song was covered by the Smiths in 1986 . Smiths singer Morrissey was an avowed admirer of Twinkles; also have Elton John and Cat Stevens is known as fans.

In 1965 Twinkle recorded A Lonely Singing Doll , an English cover version of the winning song of the Grand Prix de la Chanson , Poupée de cire, poupée de son . France Gall won with the Serge Gainsbourg title for Luxembourg ; Twinkle's version, however, was unsuccessful, as was the following single Tommy , the cover version of a song by Reparata & the Delrons , of which Twinkle also released a version sung in German .

After she had released six singles on Decca Records , she withdrew from the hit business for the first time for a while at the age of 18. In 1969, after a break of several years, the single Micky was released on the Immediate Label by Andrew Loog Oldham , but only a week after the release, the label was dissolved and a possible comeback was prevented. Twinkle recorded records every now and then until the 1980s; these later recordings appeared mostly under the name Twinkle Ripley or, together with her father Sidney Ripley, as the duo Bill & Coo . She also worked as a composer for TV themed music and advertising jingles. Twinkle was married to actor Graham Rogers and had two children with him. In 2010 she fell ill with cancer, of which she died five years later.
