Two Handed Transatlantic Race

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Two Handed Transatlantic Race or TwoSTAR is a transatlantic regatta for sailboats with two sailors on board. First organized in 1981, the regatta course ran from Plymouth (England) to Newport (USA) approximately every four years , ie over approximately 2820 nautical miles (approximately 5222.6 kilometers). Depending on the weather and ice situation, the yachts sail a 5% to 20% longer distance to their destination. The race is a parallel event to the one -handed regatta Observer Single-Handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR), which has been held since 1960 and also takes place every four years .

In 1986 the Italian yacht Berlucchi with crew members Giuseppe Beppe Panada and Roberto Kramar was lost during the race. The yacht was later found floating upside down with the keel broken off.

German participants were Dieter Kowalewski / Ralf Steinhardt on Snowball (1986) in 27d 14h 24m, Wolfgang Quix / Herbert Weingärtner on Jeantex III (1986) in 25d 12h 11m. and Uwe Röttgering / Asia Pajkowska on Rote 66 (2017) in 20d 22h 43m.

The regatta paused from 1994 due to the increasing number of other - especially French - transatlantic regattas.

In 2012 there was a new edition of the race. Of nine starters, only five made it to the port of destination Newport. In 2017 the race started together with the OSTAR. Of the seven starters, only two made it to the finish. Three yachts gave up due to technical problems, two sank in a storm. The crews could be saved.

The Twostar planned for 2020 has been postponed to 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
