The Aniara type from the Wallenius shipping company was built in a series of five units. They were the first modern car transporters planned and built as such .

details

The design of the Aniara and her sister ships was carried out by the ship construction office Fartygskonstruktionen in Uddevalla according to instructions and preliminary drafts of the shipping company Wallenius. The shipping company had gained experience with other car transporters since 1955 and was the first to implement the RoRo principle for new builds of this type of ship. The actual construction of the series was commissioned in 1963 from Lödöse Varf in Lödöse and Ekensbergs Varv in Stockholm. The Lödöse shipyard delivered the type ship Aniara to its clients on December 13, 1963, the day before the Oberon was launched there . As usual with Wallenius, the names of the five ships are based on pieces of music - here on operas Aniara , Oberon , Elektra , Porgy and Bess .

The Aniara and her sisters were initially used for Wallenius in car transport in the North and Baltic Seas and then sold again between 1967 and 1972. Two of the ships went to the shipping company Scandinavian Motorships Ab Stockholm , which had originally also ordered a ship of the type, two more (the first built Aniara and the final Bess ) were taken over by the shipping company Halidan Limited from Hamilton in Bermuda and the fifth ship became sold to South Africa. The Aniara sailed from 1984 after further sales and name changes as Choroni for the US shipping company Welcome Maritime Company under the Venezuela flag and capsized on July 17, 1984 in the Puerto Rican port of San Juan . The ship was lifted and declared a total loss on January 17, 1985. Exactly one year later the ship was towed to Santo Domingo for demolition. 1985 also capsized and sank the sister ship Oberon . Two other ships of the series were lost in ship fires, only the former Elektra , the only ship in the series built by the Ekensbergs Werft, is still listed under the name Mount I as in service in 2012 .

technology

The ship's design was designed as a RoRo cargo ship with additional loading gear and a deckhouse arranged aft . The volume of the hold is 3767 m 3 and has three decks that are connected to one another by a ramp system. The lower decks are only 1.75 meters high, but the intermediate deck in the hatch area can be loaded with folding decks on two levels or with vehicles up to 4.00 meters high, which enables trucks to be transported. Two open wagon platforms are set up on deck, with the main deck being reinforced for loading with trucks and large containers. The normal access to the hold is through a vehicle ramp in the foldable stem of the ship. Thanks to the facility with hatch covers and loading booms, this type of ship could also be used for conventional cargo handling in paper travel. The construction of the bow visor , which protruded down into the waterline when the ship was unloaded, was relatively complex, as the ships were designed with a high ice class with a view to year-round use, especially in the Baltic Sea .

The ships are powered by a MWM eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine with an output of 1300 hp. The engine enables a speed of around twelve knots. The berthing maneuvers are a KaMeWa - pitch propeller support and an extra-large rudder.
