Launching a landing craft to Katrina

The Bataan was commissioned from Ingalls Shipbuilding at the end of 1991 and was launched there in March 1996 after a construction period of almost two years. The name of the ship refers to the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines , which played an important role in the Pacific War . In 1997 the Bataan was officially entered into service with the Navy.

From October 2003 to March 2004 the Bataan went on a tour as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom . Immediately afterwards, the first overhaul of the ship began, which lasted until the end of 2004. Bataan provided assistance in the context of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 . Before the storm began, the ship was stationed off New Orleans and began relief operations on August 30. Two helicopters with medical specialists operated from the flight deck, providing emergency aid. In addition, the helicopters delivered fresh water and other auxiliary materials from board and served as a means of transport.

In June 2006, the Bataan completed the three-week exercise Joint Caribbean Lion 2006 in the Caribbean, and in 2007 it was relocated to the Persian Gulf as part of an Expeditionary Strike Group . On July 1, 2008, the Bataan moored in Boston to attend the July 4th celebrations for the national day. In spring 2009, the Bataan moved to the Mediterranean and Arabian waters. At the beginning of 2010, a four-month shipyard layover was planned. Instead, the Bataan was deployed with the USS Carter Hall (LSD-50) and the USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43) to deliver relief supplies to the island after the Haiti earthquake in January . In March 2011, the Bataan relocated to the Mediterranean as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn .

So-called black sites were operated on board the ship , secret prisons that were used to obtain information by torture from abducted suspects as part of the “ war on terror ”.

In 2019, Bataan supported emergency relief in the Bahamas, which was devastated by Hurricane Dorian .

Name and another Navy ship of the same name

The ship was named after the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. During the Battle of the Philippines , Bataan was the last area where US forces resisted Japanese invading forces from December 1941 to January 1942. The aircraft carrier USS Bataan (CVL-29) was in service from 1943 to 1959 .
