Naomi Uemura

Naomi Uemura ( Japanese 植 村 直 己 , Uemura Naomi ; born February 12, 1941 in Hidaka (today: Toyooka ), Hyōgo Prefecture ; † lost on February 13, 1984 at Mount McKinley , Alaska ) was a Japanese adventurer and mountaineer .

biography

Uemura began mountaineering while at school and developed a particular interest in the polar regions. He carried out many of his undertakings on his own; in 1970 he made the first solo ascent of Mount McKinley . In 1978 he was the first person to reach the North Pole solo with sled dogs .

With his summit success on Mount Everest in 1970, Uemura had climbed five of the Seven Summits ( Kibo 1966, Mont Blanc 1966, Aconcagua 1968, Mt. McKinley 1970, Mt. Everest 1970). There were already plans for a solo Antarctic expedition that would also include Mount Vinson , but Naomi Uemura had an accident in February 1984 after a solo winter ascent of Mount McKinley in Alaska. The asteroid (5404) Uemura was named after him in 1993.
