Uladsimir Makej (born  August 5, 1958 near Hrodna ; Belarusian Уладзімір Макей , Russian Владимир Макей , Latinized Uładzimir Makiej and English Vladimir Makei ) is a Belarusian politician and diplomat .

Life

Makej graduated from the State Linguistic University in Minsk in 1980 and then served as a soldier for the Soviet and from 1991 for the Belarusian armed forces . After completing his military service, he was a guest student at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna between 1992 and 1993 .

From 1994 at the latest, Makej held various positions in the diplomatic service in his home country. From 1996 to 1999 he was also the representative of Belarus in the Council of Europe and at the same time advisor to the Belarusian embassy in Paris . Subsequently, he was head of the department for European cooperation at the Belarusian Foreign Ministry until 2000 . In 2008 he was finally appointed Chief of Staff and Assistant to President Aljaksandr Lukashenka .

In 2012 Makej succeeded Sjarhej Martynau as Belarusian Foreign Minister. Due to sanctions against the Belarusian government, he was temporarily banned from entering the European Union . In 2014 he was first traded as a potential successor to Lukashenka for the office of president.
