Uli Reich

Uli Reich , actually Ulrich Reich , (* 1966 ) is a German Romance studies and linguist . Reich is Professor of Romance Linguistics at the Institute for Romance Philology at the Free University of Berlin .

life and work

Reich studied Romance Philology from 1990 to 1996 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He interrupted his studies in 1992 for a stay at the Goethe Institute in Caracas as a course instructor for German as a foreign language. He finished his studies with a thesis on the fantastic stories of Julio Cortázar . In 2000, Reich did his doctorate under Wulf Oesterreicher on free pronouns, verbal clitics and zero objects in the scope of discursive variation in Portuguese in São Paulo . After positions as a research assistant in Munich and Cologne, he received his habilitation in 2007 with the thesis Differential Phonology and Polyglot Competence: Principles and the Case of French in Dakar in Cologne. From 2007, Reich was visiting professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro for one year .

Reich has been Professor of Romance Linguistics at the Institute for Romance Philology at the Free University of Berlin since 2008 . In 2011, he turned down two calls to Hamburg and Leipzig.

His main areas of work include contact and sociolinguistics , intonation and pragmatics as well as language and music. Among other things, he headed the DFG project Bilingual Prosody : Metrics, Rhythm and Intonation between Spanish and Quechua, which ran from 2015 to 2018 . The aim of the project was on the one hand to empirically record the prosody of the dialects of the two languages ​​in the bilingual region of Callejón de Conchucos in the Ancash ( Ancash-Quechua ) region in Peru , on the other hand to formulate a theory of bilingual prosody on the basis of the empirical surveys. As early as 2006–2007, Reich was in charge of a DFG-funded project on prosody in a bilingual region, specifically for the project Prosodic Forms and Functions in the French Dakars between universal trends and contact processes , the prosody of French for the residents of the Senegalese capital Dakar , whose mother tongue is usually Wolof .
