He finished his studies with a thesis on the fantastic stories of Julio Cortázar . In 2000, Reich did his doctorate under Wulf Oesterreicher on free pronouns, verbal clitics and zero objects in the scope of discursive variation in Portuguese in São Paulo . After positions as a research assistant in Munich and Cologne, he received his habilitation in 2007 with the thesis Differential Phonology and Polyglot Competence: Principles and the Case of French in Dakar in Cologne. From 2007, Reich was visiting professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro for one year .
Reich has been Professor of Romance Linguistics at the Institute for Romance Philology at the Free University of Berlin since 2008 . In 2011, he turned down two calls to Hamburg and Leipzig.
His main areas of work include contact and sociolinguistics , intonation and pragmatics as well as language and music. Among other things, he headed the DFG project Bilingual Prosody : Metrics, Rhythm and Intonation between Spanish and Quechua, which ran from 2015 to 2018 . The aim of the project was on the one hand to empirically record the prosody of the dialects of the two languages in the bilingual region of Callejón de Conchucos in the Ancash ( Ancash-Quechua ) region in Peru , on the other hand to formulate a theory of bilingual prosody on the basis of the empirical surveys. As early as 2006–2007, Reich was in charge of a DFG-funded project on prosody in a bilingual region, specifically for the project Prosodic Forms and Functions in the French Dakars between universal trends and contact processes , the prosody of French for the residents of the Senegalese capital Dakar , whose mother tongue is usually Wolof .
