Ullrich Messmer

Ullrich Messmer (born June 18, 1954 in Witzenhausen ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and trade unionist. He has been a member of the German Bundestag for the Waldeck constituency (North Hesse) since 2009 . In the 2013 Bundestag election he lost his direct mandate to CDU politician Thomas Viesehon and left the Bundestag in October 2013.

Professional career

After graduating from secondary school in 1970, Messmer completed an apprenticeship as a measurement and control mechanic in Kassel and worked in this profession until 1978. In 1979 he became the youth secretary of IG Metall in Kassel. From 1981 he was organizational secretary, in 1987 he was elected as the second authorized representative. He has been a member of the IG Metall board since 1999, and in 2000 he became the first authorized representative of IG Metall North Hesse.

Political career

Messmer has been a member of the SPD since 1972. Since 1986 he has been on the board of the SPD local association in Calden . Since 1989 he has been a community representative in Calden and a member of the district council in the Kassel district .

In the 2009 Bundestag election , he won the direct mandate in the Waldeck constituency with 37.8% of the first votes. In the Bundestag he was a full member of the Defense Committee and the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid , as well as a deputy member of the Committee on Health and the subcommittee on “Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation” .

In the 2013 Bundestag election , Messmer just lost the constituency to Thomas Viesehon with a 227 vote difference and did not return to the Bundestag via the state list (21st place). He left parliament when the 18th Bundestag met on October 22, 2013. Messmer will work as the trade union secretary of the North Hessian IG Metall.
