Ulrich Babel

Ulrich Babel (born November 4, 1931 in Bonn , † September 19, 2011 in Heilbronn ) was a German soil scientist .

Professional life path

Ulrich Babel began after graduating from high school in 1951 a degree in soil science , chemistry and botany , which he in 1958 with the promotion of Dr. sc. agr. graduation. At the University of Göttingen he wrote a dissertation on the determination of the iron oxide hydrates in the soil . He then worked at the water management planning center in Sigmaringen and at the Federal Research Institute for Forestry and Wood Management until 1965 . After a short time as a scientific assistant at the Botanical Institute of the Agricultural University of Hohenheim, he moved to the Institute for Soil Science at the University of Göttingen in 1966. In 1971 he completed his habilitation in the department of agricultural biology at the University of Hohenheim. In 1974 he was appointed to the professorship for soil biology and headed the department of the same name until 1995.

Scientific work

Ulrich Babel dealt in his research in particular with the morphology of organic matter , the effects of animal activity in the soil and the recording of the soil structure and root penetration .

The German Soil Science Society awards the Ulrich Babel Prize to young scientists for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of imaging processes .
