Ulrich Benjamin Kaupp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich Benjamin Kaupp (born April 13, 1949 in Tübingen ) is a German chemist and biophysicist .

life and career

Ulrich Benjamin Kaupp completed his chemistry studies at the University of Tübingen and the Technical University of Berlin in 1974 and received his doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. in Berlin in 1979. This was followed by postdoctoral research in Stony Brook and Osnabrück , where he completed his habilitation in 1983. After stays in the USA and Japan, he became Professor of Biophysics in Cologne in 1988 and, at the same time, Director of the Institute for Neurosciences and Biophysics at Forschungszentrum Jülich . Since 2007 he has been a scientific member of the Max Planck Society and since 2008 scientific director and head of the molecular neurosensory department at the caesar research center in Bonn . He has also been a professor there since 2008.

Memberships and honors

Kaupp has been a member of the academic senate of the TU Berlin since 1978 and won the Alcon Research Prize in 1987 . He has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2005 and of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2013 .

Scientific fields of work

Kaupp deals with the biophysics of sensory systems. He studies the physiology of various receptors and ion channels and their role in signal transduction . He also works on cell motility and chemotaxis . His first description of the modulation of the activity of cyclic adenosine monophosphate by light was, in the opinion of many scientists, a breakthrough.
