Ulrich Dibelius

Ulrich Dibelius (born November 14, 1924 in Heidelberg ; † April 27, 2008 in Starnberg ) was a German music journalist and radio editor .

Life

Dibelius studied music education (violoncello) in Frankfurt and Heidelberg from 1942–47. 1951–54 he studied history, literature and sociology in Frankfurt and Heidelberg with Horkheimer , Adorno and Wolffheim. 1953–54 he worked as a newspaper editor in Hamburg and Frankfurt, then as a radio editor at Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and from 1957–87 as a music editor at Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR). He began to publish as a music critic in the 1950s. His main subjects were new music and music sociology. In 1983 he founded MusikTexte with three colleagues . Magazine for new music and remained tirelessly active in the team of editors and authors until his death.

His book Modern Music introduces the developments in New Music : It describes different styles and currents, and it introduces influential composers. The book was published in two parts, covering the years 1945–1965 and 1965–1985. The 1994 edition supplemented the period up to the mid-1990s with an extensive afterword. In addition to the presentation of historical events (and their requirements), the book characterizes the field of new music with brief descriptions of individual works and interspersed excursions on overarching topics.

Ulrich Dibelius left behind his wife and three children, of whom Alexander Dibelius became known as an investment banker .
