Ulrich Diem

Ulrich Diem (born October 16, 1871 in Teufen AR ; † August 8, 1957 in Speicher AR ; resident in Schwellbrunn ) was a Swiss conservator, author, council member and theater director from Appenzell Ausserrhoden in St. Gallen .

Life

Ulrich Diem was a son of the butcher and innkeeper Johann Ulrich Diem. In 1901 he married Martha Rosalia Bernet. He completed his first training with a secondary teacher certificate in St. Gallen. He then studied philosophy at the University of Bern ; with PhD in 1899 phil. From 1894 to 1907 he worked as a drawing teacher at the Bürgli boys' secondary school in St. Gallen and as such was a pioneer in reforming the teaching of drawing. From 1907 to 1953 he was a curator at the St. Gallen Art Museum . Before that, from 1904 to 1920, he was President of the St. Gallen Art Association. In the meantime, from 1917 to 1923, he was the central president of the Swiss Art Association . From 1908 to 1911, 1916 to 1918 and 1922 to 1926 he was a member of the Federal Art Commission . Ulrich Diem was president from 1912 to 1951 and interim director of the St. Gallen City Theater from 1939 to 1946 . He was also a co-founder of the Swiss and the St. Gallic-Appenzell Homeland Security Association . Ulrich Diem wrote numerous works on St. Gallen art, theater history and drawing lessons and had a great influence on the cultural life and politics of the city of St. Gallen in the first half of the 20th century. He was also a free-spirited councilor from 1909 to 1919 .
