Ulrich Fleischer

Ulrich Fleischer (born July 16, 1910 in Posen , † September 12, 1978 in Hamburg ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Ulrich Fleischer studied Classical Philology at Berlin University from 1929 . There he was particularly influenced by the lecturer Karl Deichgräber , who stimulated him to study the history of medicine in ancient times. Fleischer followed Deichgräber to the University of Marburg in 1936 , where he received his doctorate in 1937 . His dissertation was published in 1939 under the title Investigations on the pseudohippocratic writings Παραγγελίαι, Περὶ ἰητροῦ and Περὶ εὐσχημοσύνης in the series New German Research (Volume 10 of the Classical Philology Department).

After completing his studies, Fleischer initially worked as a private tutor. In 1940 he was drafted into military service. After four years at the front and several months in captivity, he returned in August 1945. In November of the same year he got a job with Bruno Snell in Hamburg as an employee at the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae . In addition, he worked as a tutor and lecturer at the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Hamburg . On October 1, 1947, he was appointed research assistant at the thesaurus . From April 1, 1954, he was a research assistant. The University of Hamburg awarded him the title of professor on July 27, 1971.

At the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae , Fleischer was initially busy building up the archive and the special library on Homer and the Greek doctors. After this preparatory work, he was involved in two major projects of the thesaurus : he was editor of the lexicon of the early Greek epic and edited the first three copies of it together with Bruno Snell; at the Index Hippocraticus he was from 1949 to 1957 and since 1970 the responsible editor.
