Ulrich Helfenstein

Ulrich Helfenstein (born May 16, 1925 in Zurich ; † May 3, 2006 ibid) was a Swiss historian and archivist .

life and work

Ulrich Helfenstein studied history at the University of Zurich . In 1952 he did his doctorate with Marcel Beck with the thesis Contributions to the problem of age in middle history . From 1954 until his retirement in 1990 he worked at the State Archives of the Canton of Zurich , which he headed from 1969 to 1983, succeeding Hans Conrad Peyer as state archivist. Helfenstein founded the edition of the Zurich university registers and headed the board of trustees of the Pius Foundation for Papal Deeds from 1969 to 1988 . Ulrich Helfenstein was married to Dorothea Tschudi, a daughter of Rudolf Tschudi.
