Ulrich Hoyer (born June 4, 1938 in Weimar ; † July 21, 2020 ) was a German philosopher .

Life

Ulrich Hoyer studied physics at the University of Mainz and the University of Vienna from 1958 to 1965 and graduated as a physicist in 1965. In 1969 he was in Mainz with the work "The nuclear stopping cross section of various gases for alpha particles in Umladungsgebiet" to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. 1973 habilitation he did for the History of Science at the University of Stuttgart , in 1975 he received a call as Professor of Philosophy , with special reference to the philosophy of science, at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . In 2003 he retired. He held a visiting professorship for natural philosophy at the private Gustav Siewerth Academy .

Hoyer's areas of work and main research areas were the history and the fundamentals of physics, in particular quantum and relativity theory . His particular research interest was the problem of the interpretation of quantum mechanics, for which he was looking for a solution on a stochastic basis. He submitted counter-proposals to the modern theory of relativity, of whose scientific finality he, along with Dingler and other skeptics, was not convinced, and he called for a return to the rational analytical method of classical physics. He takes the position that for Galilean reference systems the Galileo transformation, in contrast to the Lorentz or Voigt transformation, is unreservedly valid. In the field of cosmology, he questions the correctness of the big bang hypothesis.

Hoyer was chairman of the board of trustees of the Hugo-Dingler-Stiftung , Aschaffenburg , for many years , and as such promoted the printing of scientific non-fiction books in the fields of philosophy, philosophy of science and the history of science. At the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees on March 8, 2019, he resigned from this position for reasons of age and as a member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees.
