Ulrich Laemmli
Ulrich Karl Laemmli , actually Lämmli, (* 1940 in Schaffhausen ) is a Swiss biochemist , molecular biologist and professor at the University of Geneva . He is known for developing the SDS-PAGE .
Laemmli studied physics at the ETH Zurich and received a doctorate in molecular biology from the University of Geneva. He was a professor at Princeton University and has been at Geneva University since 1981.
Laemmli succeeded in significantly improving polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for the separation of proteins. He published it in a Nature article in 1970, which was actually devoted to the structure of a bacteriophage and is one of the most cited scientific papers of all. Laemmli developed the method during a stay abroad in Cambridge, but did not patent it.
He also looked at the structure of chromatin .
In 1988 he received the Marcel Benoist Prize and in 1996 the Louis Jeantet Prize . Since 1989 he has been a member of the Academia Europaea . In 2006 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
