Ulrich Norbert Schulenburg (born June 17, 1941 in Vienna ) is an Austrian publisher and author. He has been co-owner of Thomas Sessler Verlag since 1984 and was its managing director.

biography

Schulenburg was born as the son of Alfons Maria Schulenburg and Maria, geb. Simatovich, born. After attending primary and secondary school, he completed a course in advertising and sales technology at the Vienna University of Economics in 1959. After serving in the armed forces, he first worked for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the Vienna Atomic Energy Agency, then for the computer company Olivetti, where he most recently held a position as head of department.

In 1969 he took over the management of Thomas Sessler Verlag, Vienna (formerly Georg Marton Verlag). By purchasing the Universal Edition drama department in 1973, he acquired the rights to the works from the authors HC Artmann , Peter Turrini , Wilhelm Pevny and Franz Xaver Kroetz . Stays in the USA followed, including a. in Los Angeles, from 1978 to 1980. Through contacts with the émigré scene, Schulenburg was able to secure film authoring rights and bequests, including Fritz Lang , Walter Reisch , Erich Pommer , Curt and Robert Siodmak , Henry Koster , Josef von Sternberg and Billy Wilder . He was also co-organizer of the Austrian-German-Swiss semester at the German Department of the University of Southern California.

Schulenburg has been co-owner and managing director of Thomas Sessler Verlag since 1984. He succeeded in securing the estates of Ödön von Horváth , Roda-Roda , Helmut Qualtinger , Jesse Thor , and Karl Farkas . In 1970 he was the initiator of the Ödön v. Horváth complete edition by Suhrkamp Verlag . He is also the discoverer and promoter of the literary talents Brigitte Schwaiger , Silke Hassler and Daniel Kehlmann . In 1992, under the direction of Schulenburg, the film companies Wien-Film and Sascha-Film were purchased by the Federal Ministry of Finance together with Hubert Schmitt.

In 1993 Thomas Sessler Verlag took over the Austrian representation of Boosey & Hawkes Verlag in London. This enabled him to expand the electronic music department at Thomas Sessler Verlag. From 1982 to 1988 he was Vice President of the Austrian Stage Publishers Association. From 1999 to 2011 he was Vice President of the Literar Mechana. In 2011 his autobiography was published by Amalthea Verlag under the title “You will laugh, everything is true”.

Ulrich Schulenburg is married to Sabine Schulenburg and has two sons. He lives in Vienna.
