Positions and main research areas

Ulrich Oevermann has been developing the methodology of objective hermeneutics since 1969 as part of his socialization-theoretical and family-sociological research . Since his appointment to Frankfurt for a professorship for sociology with a focus on social psychology (1970), he has endeavored to test this methodology and the processes that can be derived from it in many subject areas and to confront it with data types from the social, cultural and human sciences. This process can be considered to have been completed since around 1994. Since then he has worked hard to implement this methodology in clinical sociology and socio-analysis.

In addition to family sociology and socialization research, Oevermann's research and work focuses on the theory of professionalization , the reconstruction of interpretation patterns and habitus formations, the sociology of language and knowledge as well as the sociology of religiosity . Researchers who work according to the methodology of objective hermeneutics founded - together with Oevermann - the working group objective hermeneutics in the legal form of an association. The association , recognized as a non-profit, serves to promote hermeneutic social research.
