Ulrich Rebstock

Ulrich Rebstock (born May 18, 1951 in Kirchheim / N. ) Is a German orientalist and professor of Islamic and Arabic studies in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Life

Rebstock received his doctorate in 1983 with “Die Ibadiya im Magrib” and completed his habilitation in 1990 with “Arithmetic in the Islamic Orient” . Since 1993 he has been a full professor of Islamic studies at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg.

He is engaged in the following research projects:

  • Critical text edition of the 4th, 5th and 6th parts of Kitab al-A'dad by the Moorish historian Ahmad b. Ahbayyib
  • Moorish legal opinion. In collaboration with Yahya Ould El Bara ( Nouakchott ) and David Powers ( Cornell University , Ithaca NY). Edition and printing of approx. 5000 Mauritanian fatawa (16th – 20th century) in 9 volumes.

Moorish literary history

In around 20 years of research, Rebstock has compiled 5,000 authors and 10,000 work titles and collected them in a database, which was also published in book form in 2002 under the title Moorish Literary History . The three-volume work provides for the first time insights into a literature of the Moorish cultural heritage, the existence of which was largely unknown until now.
