Ulrich Woelk

Ulrich Woelk (born August 18, 1960 in Bonn ) is a German writer .

life and work

Ulrich Woelk grew up in Cologne in the Porz am Rhein district . From 1980 to 1987 he studied physics and philosophy at the University of Tübingen . In his diploma thesis he dealt with a topic from chaos theory . From 1987 to 1995 he worked as an astrophysicist at the Technical University of Berlin and at the University of Göttingen . During this time his first literary works fall. a. his debut novel Freilang , 1990, and the novel Rückspiel , 1993. In 1991 Woelk received his doctorate at the Technical University of Berlin on white dwarfs in close binary star systems .

Woelk has lived as a freelance writer in Berlin since 1995. He has received several grants from the German Literature Fund and the Prussian Sea Trade Foundation . His novel Freilang was awarded the Aspect Literature Prize in 1990. In 2005 he received the Thomas Valentin Literature Prize of the city of Lippstadt for his work .

Woelk held poetry and writing professorships in Tübingen and at the University of Paderborn and in 2009 was Writer in Residence at the Goethe Institute and the Nirox Foundation in Johannesburg , South Africa.

His novel The Last Performance About the Assassination of a Fictional RAF Terrorist was filmed in 2004 by Matti Geschonneck under the title Mord am Meer for ZDF with Heino Ferch and Nadja Uhl in the leading roles, broadcast in spring 2005 and awarded the Critic's Prize at the Film Festival in Hamburg as well as the prize in the drama category at the New York Festival. Woelk's novels thematically revolve equally around German present and history ( lovers , return match , The Last Presentation , What Love Is ) as well as the role of the natural sciences and the natural scientist in modern times ( Die Einsamkeit des Astronomen , Einstein on the Lake ). A specialty in his work is the narrative non-fiction book Sternenklar . In it, a father and astronomer explains modern astronomy and cosmology to his daughter who has just started school.

Woelk was awarded the Alfred Döblin Prize in 2019 for his novel project For a Life .

Woelk's work includes novels, plays, radio plays and essays. His plays were a. a. performed in Berlin, Cologne and Zurich. His novels have been translated into numerous languages.
