Ulrich Maria Ludwig Philipp Joseph Duke of Württemberg (born June 13, 1877 in Gmunden ; † June 13, 1944 in Altshausen Castle ) was a German officer and prince of the royal house of Württemberg .

Life

Ulrich was the fifth child of Duke Philip of Württemberg and his wife Marie Therese of Austria . He thus belonged to the Catholic line of the House of Württemberg. His eldest brother was the heir to the Württemberg throne and later General Field Marshal Albrecht Duke of Württemberg . As prince of the royal house of Württemberg, Ulrich held a mandate in the Württemberg chamber of civil servants from 1898 until the end of the monarchy in 1918, and was usually present there personally. Only from 1901 to 1904 was he represented by his older brother Robert . After Ulrich had passed his Matura in Vienna, he joined the Württemberg army and completed military training in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg. He was promoted to major by 1908 and on July 25, 1910 was given command of the Uhlan Regiment "King Wilhelm I." (2nd Württembergisches) No. 20 . In this position Ulrich was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1911 and to colonel in 1913. On June 19, 1914, he was initially assigned to represent the commander of the 27th Cavalry Brigade on leave . With the mobilization at the outbreak of the First World War , this large association was dissolved and Ulrich was appointed commander of the 16th Cavalry Brigade . In this position he was promoted to major general on October 5, 1916 and on November 3, 1917 he was commander of the 26th Infantry Division .

Ulrich von Württemberg, who remained single throughout his life, was a member of various societies and associations, including the Württemberg Warrior League, the German Colonial Society , the Württemberg Association for Commercial Geography , the Württemberg Association for Coin Studies , the Stuttgart Association for the Promotion of Art and in the Stuttgart Rifle Guild . He was far removed from National Socialism , which is why he resigned from his officer comradeship in 1938, which had to join the Nazi-controlled Reich Warrior League.
