Philip of Württemberg
Duke Philipp Alexander Maria Ernst of Württemberg (born July 30, 1838 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ; † October 11, 1917 in Stuttgart ) was a member of the House of Württemberg as the son of Duke Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm of Württemberg and Marie Christine of Orléans .
Life
Since the mother died when the son was only six months old, he was brought to the Paris court, where he was raised by his grandparents, King Louis Philip of France and Queen Marie Amélie . Although the House of Württemberg and thus also the father were Protestant, the boy was baptized Catholic, which is why the House of Württemberg is Catholic today. In 1848 the royal family fled Paris due to the revolution . The boy returned to his father and lived with him at Fantaisie Castle in Bayreuth .
As a young man, Duke Philipp asked for the hand of Princess Sophie in Bavaria , the youngest sister of Empress Elisabeth of Austria . However, this marriage project failed, whereupon Philipp married Archduchess Marie Therese in 1865 . On the Ringstrasse, the couple had a magnificent city palace, the “Palais Württemberg”, built by the Munich builder Arnold Zenetti with the help of Heinrich Adam , and have lived in it since 1866 without feeling comfortable there. That is why the palace was sold in 1871, rebuilt and opened as the Hotel Imperial for the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 . The ducal couple moved into the " Strudelhof " in Vienna. In Altmünster on the Traunsee, Duke Philipp had a magnificent villa built by the architect Heinrich Adam between 1873 and 1876 and named it after his wife "Villa Marie Therese". In 1955, this building fell to the Republic of Austria as a result of the Austrian State Treaty and is today - after a historically accurate restoration - a federal high school .
In addition to hunting - for which larger areas were purchased in Hinterstoder - the Duke was interested in photography. With the cameras that were modern at the time, he made recordings, some of which are unique today.
In Wuerttemberg the situation that excelled in the late 19th century on, King William II. Have no sons would. Since there were no appropriate sons in other lines of the house, but the male succession applied, the right of succession to the throne fell to Duke Philip. Due to his age - he was ten years older than the king - his son Duke Albrecht was viewed from the outset as the future heir to the throne and accordingly introduced into the business. Duke Philipp lived in the Prinzenpalais in Stuttgart with his family after he had sold the Strudelhof in Vienna in 1905. The Duke died in Stuttgart at the age of 79 and was buried in Ludwigsburg; In 1927, the son Duke Albrecht had the coffin transferred to the newly built family crypt at the St. Michael Castle and Parish Church in Altshausen . Duke Philipp is the progenitor of today's House of Württemberg.
According to the statutes of the order, at the age of fourteen he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown .
