The Ulrichsberggemeinschaft ( homecoming and Europe memorial ) is a right-wing extremist Austrian association with political interests, which was founded after the Second World War and is named after Ulrichsberg in Carinthia . It is counted among the traditional Carinthian associations . The motive of the association is the maintenance of the homecoming memorial on the Ulrichsberg and in Klagenfurt as well as the organization of an annual meeting of war veterans and relatives.

The Union

The association was founded on June 1, 1953 and is based in Klagenfurt. Various Carinthian politicians belonged to her, u. a. was the former mayor of Klagenfurt Leopold Guggenberger (ÖVP) President, followed by the former Deputy Governor Rudolf Gallob (SPÖ). Gallob, however, resigned in 2009 because “the clear procedure to differentiate from extremism” had failed. Ex-Federal Minister Herbert Haupt ( BZÖ ) and the Mayor of Klagenfurt Harald Scheucher (ÖVP), whose father Blasius Scheucher, as a former mountain hunter, was a co-founder of the community, also support the community as members. In addition to membership fees and donations, the association has been financed to a large extent from public grants from the State of Carinthia since 2002. Between 2005 and 2012 the community was subsidized by the state of Carinthia with 115,000 euros. According to Regional Councilor Wolfgang Waldner, these financial aid will be cut in the future. According to Wallner, there will be a complete abolition of the subsidies if the UBG board does not distance itself one hundred percent from right-wing extremist activities.

Since 1958, a commemoration ceremony for the victims of both world wars and the Carinthian defensive struggle has been held in October on the small meadow next to the cross . The celebration is considered an event in which right-wing extremists and neo-Nazi-minded people also take part. She is observed by the Austrian protection of the constitution.

In 2009, the Austrian Armed Forces under Norbert Darabos canceled their logistical support for the meeting. The Defense Minister also imposed a uniform ban for the event. Darabos distanced himself from the veterans' meeting, as "the Ulrichberg meeting has always had a right-wing extremist appearance". As a result, as well as due to the political controversy, the Ulrichberg meeting in 2009 was not organized by the Ulrichberg community. The FPÖ Carinthia organized its own Ulrichsberg meeting with its own wreath-laying ceremony. Also BZÖ -Landeshauptmann Gerhard Doerfler distanced himself since the celebration was "politically too far right."

In 2010, the meeting took place at the Herzogstuhl instead, with 400 visitors. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, around 100 participants gathered in 2011 when the event took place in the Klagenfurt concert hall .

In 2012 the meeting took place again at Ulrichsberg. One of the speeches was given by a former member of the Waffen-SS Herbert Belschan von Mildenburg , which the organizers had denied in advance. Instead of the expected 1,000, only about 300 people attended the meeting.

Political appearances and controversies

In a sensational speech in 1995 , FPÖ state chairman Jörg Haider expressed his thanks to the former Waffen SS soldiers present:

“That in these busy times there are still decent people who have a character and who stand by their convictions even with the greatest headwind and have remained true to their convictions to this day. [...] We give money for terrorists, for violent newspapers, for work-shy rabble, and we have no money for decent people. "

Jörg Haider had a decisive influence on the public image of Ulrichsberg with his speeches.

"[...] it cannot be the case that the story of our parents and grandparents is turned into a criminal album due to strange comments and that their achievements are trampled underfoot by the story." "

The meeting of the Ulrichsberg community and the participation of the three large state parliament parties , the FPÖ , SPÖ and ÖVP , met with increasing criticism, which is why no representatives from the state government or parties have appeared at Ulrichsberg in recent years. In 2017, after the official event, Martin Rutter, Member of the Carinthian State Parliament, gave a speech on the subject of "Migration Lies" (title: Defensive Fight Against Migration and Migration Lies). His officially announced role as the main speaker at the meeting had previously led to his exclusion from the Carinthia team.

Protests against the meeting

In the night of August 17, 1997, the memorial on Ulrichsberg was smeared and the memorial plaques attached there were destroyed. An anti-fascist “kommando zala” confessed to the action. In recent years, counter-rallies and info points from various anti- fascist organizations took place at the same time as the Ulrichsberg celebrations, which, in their opinion, point to the history-revisionist background of this memorial rally. These were organized by groups from the Carinthian antifa scene. According to the 2009 report on the Protection of the Constitution , foreign activists - mainly from Germany - are said to have participated in the demonstrations organized by Carinthian groups. During the counter rallies in 2008 there were also blockades, fights and property damage. In 2007 a functionary of the Ulrichsberg community and a police officer were injured in physical violence.
