The osmosis between art and science is a basic feature in all phases of Ulysses Belz's work.

The preoccupation with the pre-Socratics is reflected in the main graphic work: "Eternity is a playing child on the throne" / Contributions by scientists and artists to the present of pre-Socratic thought, 69 etchings by Ulysses Belz with texts by Dietmar Kamper , Oliver Primavesi , Otto E. Rössler , Botho Strauss and Siegfried Zielinski , Vol I / II, edition 40 self-published, Bonn / Leipzig 2000. Copies of the edition are in important libraries in Germany, Austria and the USA.

In collaboration with the French philosopher and consciousness researcher Joëlle Proust, Ulysses Belz developed metacognitive painting from 2005 in his studio in Paris at 41 rue Pajol. In this painterly style, the fields of consciousness in painting are expanded to include those areas from which one's own cognition is controlled and accompanied. This sub-personal control is in turn thematized artistically. Joëlle Proust describes metacognitive painting as a “revolutionary project of painting the forms of thought”.

The still young art historical assessment of metacognitive painting speaks of an "approach that does not understand conscious processes in the action and control of artistic activity as an obstacle or crisis of the author, but as the actual theme of the work of art". In a catalog for the exhibition “Floating States” published in Munich in 2018, metacognitive painting is welcomed as a “phenomenon of reality pluralism” .

As a graphic artist, Ulysses Belz specializes in the technique of classic copper engraving, which he uses within a current aesthetic (not historicizing).
