Teaching

introduction

“Reality has evaporated”: Karl Popper's theorem about the impossibility of objective knowledge in the face of a reality that evades observation does not seem to be an unsuitable working basis for an artist who has made the representation of the impossibility of objective representation of reality his task. The question of the image, that is, of the relationship between reality and the modalities of its reflection, has always challenged artists - but no one has asked it so consistently and used it for artistic answers as Norbert Pümpel. Since the 1970s he has developed a work that, in the border area of natural science, philosophy and also theology, revolves around the old question of the possibilities and limits of human knowledge and - related to this - the possibilities of the image and its performance in relation to reality in ever new spirals of thought .

With the Fleeting Memorials, Norbert Pümpel once again grapples with the times. He relativizes memory by staging small memorial plaques, which are, however, subject to strong changes over time. By using very thin papers and various substances that change the paper over the years, Pümpel takes the deterioration into account. No concrete event or individual person is remembered here, a ten-digit sequence only indicates how many people are estimated to be living on the planet at the specified time. ( Harald Kimpel ) The Fleeting Memorials have been shown in Marburg (D), Appenzell (CH), Vienna (A) and Shibukawa (JP) since 2014
