Hubert Lampert (2003)

Hubert Lampert (born March 28, 1953 in Götzis ) is an Austrian sculptor and conceptual artist .

Life

Born the fifth of six children to a family of craftsmen (father mason, mother housewife), Hubert Lampert grew up with three sisters and two brothers. After an apprenticeship as a toolmaker, in which he secretly manufactured his first metal objects, followed years of traveling and self-taught studies, trips to Andalusia and Morocco , longer stays in Amsterdam , Malmö and Cologne . From 1977 to 1987 he worked as a prototype builder in a technical - mechanical development workshop. During this time mobiles , installations and "sound machines" were created. Some temporary public works such as the autostatic doom scene with the artist group Fiat & Robot or his “bell installation” in a city forest were destroyed or stolen by visitors. With the exhibition Provocation & Flattery and the documentary The Laughter in the Cabinet of Obscure Objects , he ended the series of pointless machines. Lampert has been working as a freelance artist since 1987.

He still lives and works in his home town of Götzis.

After a turning point, Lampert developed a clear, geometrically defined language of forms that went hand in hand with a complete change of material. For the exhibition Objects - Parts - Colors in the House for Constructive and Concrete Art in Zurich, Beatrix Ruf wrote : “Hubert Lampert's cube constructions and deconstructions are a real undertaking to restore form. They function as teaching pieces of plastic design with the possibilities of the known object. Understanding what form state and form effect mean is one goal, expanding the vocabulary is another. "

The reduced language with the concrete shapes of the geometry, the use of pure basic colors - or their first mixed colors and the considerations on line, surface and volume - lead to an objectification of form and color. Numerous groups of works such as E.g .: the Fibonacci works (drawings, installations, sculptures), the elementary disks (works in concrete), the sound cube (a conceptual design work with six stations), the information tapes (these are actually texts, poems, quotations, etc., which are mostly are executed in relief-like , colored objects and can be deciphered with the "Lampert cipher disk", the object becomes readable) and works in public space, where he creates site-specific objects and space-specific sculptures. In the game of chance and necessity, always on the basis of concrete considerations, Lampert succeeds in creating a complete work of heterogeneity and variability.

The creative game of questions about the perception of surfaces is an expression of a constant search for space through construction and line. The objects are experimental arrangements for the experience of real and illusionistic space, of depth and plasticity. The two-dimensional picture revolts and strives into space, the drawing demands depth and mutates into a construct. Everything is in motion and today is nothing more than an intermediate form.
