Umberto Pasquale

Umberto Maria Pasquale SDB (born September 1, 1906 in Vignole Borbera , † March 5, 1985 in Rivoli ) was an Italian religious priest and writer .

Life

Umberto Maria Pasquale grew up in Val Borbera . At the age of thirteen he came to the Salesians of Don Bosco in Valdocco in Turin and studied there until 1921. He wanted to join the order and go on a mission, but his father would not allow it. Instead he switched to the seminary of Stazzono in the diocese of Tortona . However, in the early 1930s he left seminary and returned to the Salesians. After the novitiate in Borgomanero and his first profession , he registered as a missionary for Colombia in 1932 . Instead, his superiors sent him but in 1933 temporarily to Lisbon in Portugal , where he on 21 December 1935 at the Patriarchate Lisbon by Manuel Cardinal Gonçalves Cerejeira for ordained priests was.

Appointed novice master in 1937, he founded a novitiate house in Mogofores . In the forties he moved to Porto and started the Salesian publishing house "Edições Salesianas" in Portugal.

He met the mystic Alexandrina Maria da Costa (1905–1955), who was beatified on April 25, 2005 by Pope John Paul II . On September 8, 1944, he became her spiritual guide for four years. He encouraged her to keep a spiritual diary and soon became her biographer.

Pasquale returned to Turin in Piedmont in 1948 , although regular correspondence between them continued until da Costa died in 1955.

After the Archbishop of Braga entrusted him with the organization of the beatification process for Alexandrina Maria da Costa in 1965 , he returned to Portugal between 1967 and 1973. After he brought the documents he had collected to Rome on May 7, 1973, he worked in the Italian publishing house in Rivoli near Turin and lived there until his death.
