history

South substation

From 1913 the South substation was built in Vienna-Meidling (in the course of time also: switching and transformer house Pottendorfer Straße , main switching and transformer station Pottendorfer Straße or substation Meidling ) in order to feed the electricity supplied by the Ebenfurth power plant into the city's grid.

His task was to transform the fed-in voltage from 35  kV to 5 kV and to integrate the 35 kV line into the future medium-voltage network of the City of Vienna. However, this substation was only able to fulfill its actual purpose after the completion of Austria's first 70 kV line, which was delayed by the First World War - this was initially only operated as a 35 kV line.

Operation with 35 kV was ended in 1923 and operation with 70 kV began at the same time. With the completion of the 110 kV high-voltage line coming from Styria via Ternitz and the Ebenfurth substation on the site of the former Ebenfurth steam power station, an outdoor switchgear for 110 kV was put into operation in the south substation .

Today's power supply

Cable transfer station Vorarlberger Allee

In addition to supplying power to the southern districts of Vienna, the control of eight substations in Vienna and Lower Austria is one of the current tasks of this substation. The South substation is directly connected to the 380 kV high-voltage ring via a 380 kV line from the Vienna Southeast substation . The 380 kV line will be routed as an overhead line between the Vienna Southeast substation and the Pfarrgasse cable transfer station next to Vorarlberger Allee , and then through the partially densely built-up industrial and urban areas to the South substation as an underground cable.

From the south substation a 380 kV underground cable route built in 1984 leads to the Kendlerstrasse substation in the Ottakring district and from there across Vienna in an easterly direction to the Simmering substation .

On September 20, 1999, a simulation organized for the press of the critical turn of the year 1999/2000 took place in the South substation. A corresponding report in the Vienna City Hall correspondence was also included in the " German dictionary of variants "
