The 380-kV high-voltage ring , also called the 380-kV ring , refers to an electrical high-voltage network located or planned in eastern Austria , which is operated by the Austrian Power Grid  (APG) with a voltage of 380  kV and for the supra-regional exchange of electrical energy within Austria serves. It is technically part of the European network . The ring structure achieves a high level of reliability because every point on the ring is supplied from two sides. This cheap type of connection is possible because in eastern Austria the largest consumers (from the northwest in clockwise direction: Salzburg , Linz , Vienna , Graz ) and the largest power plants ( Austrian Danube power plants , pumped storage in the Alps ) are geographically arranged along a ring. Otherwise - as in most other countries - a meshed network with far more route kilometers would be necessary to ensure the same level of security of supply.

The 380 kV high voltage ring crosses the federal states of Salzburg , Upper and Lower Austria , Burgenland , Styria , partly Carinthia and a small part also Tyrol ( East Tyrol ). It is divided into several sections:

  • the Danube line, which is currently operated with 220 kV for the Danube power plants , and parallel pipeline systems that are operated with 380 kV. The Danube rail and all Danube power plants will be converted from 220 kV to a nominal voltage of 380 kV.
  • the 380 kV Burgenland line completed at the beginning of 2000
  • the 380 kV Styria line completed at the end of 2009 and
  • the 380 kV Salzburg line , the first (northern) section of which was completed in 2011. The start of construction for the 2nd section was announced for autumn 2019.
  • Closing the 380 kV gap is the least urgent in Carinthia, as the existing 220 kV network there has a relatively high capacity. A conversion to 380 kV or a new building with this voltage is planned by approx. 2023.

The main hubs are for intra-Austrian energy exchange between power plants and consumers the substation Tauern , substation Ernsthofen , Substation Vienna Southeast and in Völkermarkt location substation Obersielach. There are also connections to subordinate voltage levels such as the 220 kV level and the 110 kV distribution networks. The federal capital Vienna is connected to the high-voltage ring twice via the Vienna Southeast substation and the 400 kV north feed-in Vienna .

In addition to the energy exchange within Austria, the 380 kV line network also serves to exchange electricity with neighboring countries. There are direct 380 kV connections via the Dürnrohr substation to Slavětice in the Czech Republic, via which the majority of Austrian electricity imports from the Czech Republic are made, via the Sarasdorf substation to Győr in Hungary and via the Kainachtal substation to Slovenia.

criticism

Due to the alpine conditions and the spatially tight structures, the route as a 380 kV overhead line is controversial, especially in Salzburg and Styria, and the starting point for various political and legal controversies.
