The Umweltarena (own name Umwelt Arena Schweiz ) was opened in August 2012 by Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard together with the initiator Walter Schmid and is located in the industrial area of Spreitenbach , Aargau . The Umwelt Arena was designed as an exhibition and event platform for up to 4000 visitors. The project was planned and carried out privately by Walter Schmid, the inventor of the Kompogas process. Around 140 companies and organizations are present on five floors , informing visitors about sustainable products and services, sustainable living and environmental protection that is suitable for everyday use. The 45 solo exhibitions are open all year round. The Umwelt Arena is not supported by state funds and does not receive any public funds or federal subsidies. The Umwelt Arena is financed by entrance fees, rental income for the exhibition areas, income from events and sponsorship money.

Solar modules with gutter

The Umwelt Arena is a plus energy building (PlusEnergieBau PEB) with four upper and three lower floors. The exterior of the building appears futuristic. In the words of architect René Schmid , Walter Schmid's son, the shape is derived from both bird wings and the appearance of fast cars and boats. In addition, the building should appear dynamic, which requires a good length-height ratio. The facets and the dark sheen of the photovoltaic elements should be reminiscent of the facet cut of a crystal.

The upward-facing parts of the outer shell are completely covered with solar cells . The building is therefore equipped with the largest roof-integrated system in Switzerland. 5239 monocrystalline photovoltaic cells, which deliver 540,000 kWh of electricity, are arranged on 33 individual surfaces  ; That is more than twice the self-energy requirement. The steepest roof surfaces have a slope of 60 °, the least sloping are tilted by 6 °. These almost horizontal surfaces made a special substructure necessary so that no pressing water can get into the interior of the building. At the lower end of the roof there is a wide, rectangular rain gutter that has to withstand heavy loads, especially when the snow starts to melt. The solar system was connected to the Swiss grid at the end of 2011.

The interior of the building is defined by the so-called arena, which extends over three floors. From the individual floors you have an unobstructed view of the lowest building level, which can be seated with up to 1500 seats. Various events take place there over the course of the year. The exhibition rooms are arranged on the individual floors facing the exterior of the building and can be reached via wide walkways.

construction time

Even during the construction phase, efforts were made to keep the environmental impact as low as possible. The construction site was CO 2 -neutral. Renewable energies were used: wind power for the construction crane, solar systems on the building barracks, trucks powered by bio and natural gas, biodiesel for the construction machinery and CO 2 -neutral electricity on the construction site.

3rd floor

Accessible roof area with exhibitions solar energy , wind energy , biomass energy and green roofs . In addition, parts of the building technology are housed here.

The leftovers from the in-house restaurant of the Umwelt Arena are converted into energy in the Kompogas plant.

The use of biomass is CO 2 -neutral. Organic raw materials are renewable and, during photosynthesis, incorporate the carbon dioxide that is released during utilization. In power plants, wood can be used to generate electricity and heat. Fermentation is used to produce biogas from organic waste (garden and kitchen waste). Processed biogas can be fed into the natural gas network. Thus, depending on requirements, it can be used for heating, driving or generating electricity via a combined heat and power plant.

The roof terrace has various functions: The roof is greened ( urban farming ). The areas are designed differently and offer rare plant species such as B. Orchids, a habitat. The in-house restaurant uses part of the area to grow herbs that are used in the kitchen. On the roof of the Umwelt Arena there are also some technical building systems: parts of the heat pumps, wind turbines and various solar systems, surface and tube collectors, a hybrid module and photovoltaic systems.

2nd Floor

The main theme on the 2nd floor is “Building and Modernizing”. The solo exhibitions are: garden , building pollutants , building envelope , building materials , building technology , household appliances , water , lighting and sustainable building .

1st floor

The first floor is dedicated to “Energy and Mobility”. The special exhibitions are financing , mobile communication , insurance , mobility as well as a room for changing exhibitions and a conference room.

ground floor

The motto on the ground floor is “Nature and Life”. In addition to a sales area for sustainable products, there are also exhibitions on the topics of sustainability , biodiversity , retail , living , wood-based materials , recycling , environmental professions , certification and chemistry . The restaurant and another seminar room are also located here.

1st basement

The large open space, the so-called arena, has a clear view up to the 2nd floor. Here there are two further seminar rooms as well as the entrances to the two underground parking spaces arranged on the side. The two other basement floors are reserved for technical equipment and are not accessible to the public.

Building climate

The climate inside the building is controlled automatically. A complex building services system can use both the thermal system on the roof and a ground collector field with 9 km long lines that start under the 3rd floor slab. An absorption chiller as well as a 70,000 l cold water storage tank and a hot water storage tank of the same size ensure the correct heating and cooling requirements. A total of 60 m long water pipes in which a brine-water mixture circulates are laid under the building ceilings.

Thermal insulation

The compact design ensures good thermal insulation. In addition, one floor is sunk into the ground, which also has a positive effect on the absorption. Both factors reduce heat loss.

  • Wall: 20 cm, U-value : 0.16 W / (m 2 K)
  • Roof / screed: 10 cm, U-value: 0.14 W / (m 2 K)
  • Floor: 20 cm, U-value: 0.17 W / (m 2 K)
  • Window (3-fold): g-value : 60%, U-value: 0.67 W / (m 2 K)

power supply

The own energy supply is 608,700 kWh / a (203%). It is calculated based on the expected total energy requirement (final energy) of 299,500 kWh / a and thus provides an energy surplus of 103% (309,200 kWh / a). The glass-glass photovoltaic modules were produced by the Swiss manufacturer 3S Photovoltaics .

  • 760 kWp photovoltaics 5300 m 2 , 102 kWh / m 2 a, 540,000 kWh / a (180%)
  • Solar thermal 38 m 2 , 530 kWh / m 2 a, 20'150 kWh / a (7%)
  • Biogas (internal food waste) 5300 m 2 , 48'550 kWh / a (16%)
