The Holland series of the Leeraner Jansen shipyard was a series of coasters that were mostly built on behalf of Dutch shipping companies.

history

The series was built in ten units between 1955 and 1958. The ship type was ordered by various shipping companies. The first construction contract was given by the captain's owner Ruurt Fekkes from Delfzijl. After a tour of the typical ship Marco Polo , the van der Schoot brothers from Harlingen and the Holwerda brothers from Heerenveen awarded further construction contracts. Later, German shipping companies also ordered the type of ship, but most of the construction contracts came from the Netherlands, which is why the ships were grouped under the term "Holland series". Initially, the ships were mainly operated in the small and medium-sized voyage and in the liner service in Rhine-Sea traffic. Later several ships of the type were extended and mostly used without loading gear in the worldwide coastal voyage.

technology

The ships of the series had, depending on the design variant, one or two cargo holds without an intermediate deck and with a volume of 878 m 3 grain space and 838 m 3 ball space. Due to the largely unobstructed shape of the hold with little under-stowage , this type of ship has a timber load capacity of around 220 standards and was often used in cellulose or parcel timber transport. In addition, the ships have a level tank ceiling thanks to the continuous double floor . Simple wooden hatch covers with a sea-proof tarpaulin cover were used. The ships were fitted with two loading booms as standard, each with a load capacity of two tons.

The ships in the series are powered by four-stroke diesel engines from various manufacturers, which act on a fixed propeller in the majority of ships . Motors from the Kiel manufacturer MaK were used most frequently .
