Uncle Josh in a Spooky Hotel is an American silent film from 1900. Directed by Edwin S. Porter . The film was released by the Edison Manufacturing Company . With the character of Uncle Josh, the first real franchise character in film history was born.

Uncle Josh walks into a haunted hotel room with the owner of a hotel. He wants to leave the hotel room before midnight, but the hotel owner forces him to stay. A little later a ghost plays some tricks on them and in the end Uncle Josh is alone with the ghost.

Charles Manley was working as an actor at the Ford Theater when the American President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Uncle Josh became a popular character who went on several adventures. Edwin S. Porter directed the other films as well.
