Uncle Josh's Nightmare is an American silent film from 1900. Directed by Edwin S. Porter . The film was released by the Edison Manufacturing Company and was the prelude to an Uncle Josh series.

Uncle Josh goes to sleep, dreaming how the devil does some jokes with him. Uncle Josh tries his best to drive him away. In the process, both the devil and his bed disappear, only to reappear as quickly as possible.
Background information
Charles Manley was working as an actor at the Ford Theater when the American President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. The film uses a few stop tricks to show the magic of the devil.
Uncle Josh became a popular character who would go on several adventures. Edwin S. Porter also directed the other films.
