Charles Manley

Charles Manley (born September 25, 1830 in Ireland, † February 26, 1916 in Los Angeles ) was an Irish actor who was best known for his role as Uncle Josh .

Life

Charles Manley was born in Ireland on September 25, 1830. He later worked at Ford's Theater and probably witnessed the assassination attempt on the American President Abraham Lincoln directly from the stage, as he was playing that evening.

Since 1900 he also worked for film. Together with Edwin S. Porter he shot the film Uncle Josh in a Spooky Hotel for the Edison Manufacturing Company .

With the character of Uncle Josh , he became the first real franchise character in film history. He was also the main actor in the two sequels, 1900 Uncle Josh's Nightmare and 1902 Uncle Josh at the Moving Picture Show .

From 1912 onwards, he was frequently used as a grandfather and old man in films such as Their One Day's Work (1912) and The Golden Rod (1912).

In 1913 he was elected honorary member for life by The Photoplayers Association. Manley was married.
