Underground - The Retribution (Original title: The Underground ) is an American action film from 1997 . Directed by Cole McKay and written by William Lawlor .

The cop Brian Donnegan is married to Candy; his marriage is in crisis. One day a music club is attacked by three gangsters wearing the masks of Abraham Lincoln , killing several people. Donnegan and his partner investigate, while they visit a music producer in his studio. The gangsters appear there too. There is a shootout in which Donnegan's partner is shot dead. Donnegan is assigned a new partner, Clarence Mills , an African American .

The relationship between Donnegan and Mills is difficult at first, the chief of the police intervenes. After a bank robbery, Mills arrests a robber disguised as Abraham Lincoln, another is shot by Donnegan. However, it is only for copycat criminals who have an alibi for the other attacks. Meanwhile, Candy demands that Donnegan quit his job.

It turns out that the robberies were committed by musicians who feel they have been treated unfairly by the producer. They blackmail him and demand five million dollars to stop the raids. In the end, they are defeated by Donnegan and Mills.

Reviews

Film-Dienst wrote that the film , which was based on an “absurd starting point”, was “quickly ephemeral B and C goods that make use of all the set pieces of the genre”. He was "at least solid in the presentation and enriched with lavishly staged action"; racism was "played on the shovel" with "humorous dialogues".

The magazine TV direkt 16/2008 wrote that the film was "quite amusing despite its cheap production".
