The Ungererbad is an outdoor pool on Ungererstraße in Munich's Schwabing district . It is operated by the Stadtwerke München .

location

Up until the 1980s, Berliner Strasse ran along the western border of the Ungererbad, on the opposite side of which was the Munich-Schwabing freight station , which was closed in 1987 . After the train station and industrial facilities were demolished, a new residential area was created, which borders the Ungererbad to the east and north. The Schwabinger See was laid out northwest of the baths .

history

The Ungererbad was built on Ungererstraße around 1900 in the form of a natural pool . The water came from the Nymphenburg-Biederstein Canal , on which the Dante baths and the Georgenschwaige baths in Munich are also located. The outdoor pool was laid out like a park and today offers large lawns and an old tree population that offer space for many visitors. Only on midsummer days can it get tight here at the weekend with up to 10,000 bathers.

Originally the Ungererbad was divided into three separate areas - for women, men and young people. Through several redesigns, today's family pool was finally created in its current form with a separate nudist area for women and a nudist area for families.

Viktor Mann , the younger brother of Heinrich and Thomas Mann , vividly describes the Ungererbad in his memories as he saw it in the early 20th century, with grottos, water features and an artificial landscape.

The pool was about 750 meters from the terminus of the horse-drawn tram at the Großwirt (today Münchner Freiheit ). The owner of the baths, August Ungerer, operated an electric railroad, the Ungererbahn , from July 1, 1886 to June 1895 at his own expense through the then Freisinger Landstrasse . This was the third electric tram in Germany, but was replaced on July 17, 1895 due to insufficient capacity by the extension of the horse-drawn tram to the newly built Nordfriedhof. The Ungererbad was last extensively renovated in 1998.

The swimming pools are located north and south of the Würm Canal: They are called "Mariensee" (with water mushroom , flow canal and waterfall), "Kaiserbecken" and "Luitpoldsee". A total of around 4,100 m² of water with two diving towers (1 and 3 meters) are available to visitors.

For children there is a so-called children's oasis and an adventure playground in the Ungererbad, as well as a non-swimmer pool for children with an adventure and paddling pool. Above that there are two beach volleyball fields, a soccer field and a trampoline . Directly at the entrance there are three playing fields for chess and mill with large pieces.

There are also two nudist areas, one mixed and one only for women.

For children and young people with a Munich holiday pass, the visit to the outdoor pool is free during the Whitsun and summer holidays.
