University of Juba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The University of Juba , English University of Juba , Arabic جامعة جوبا; is a university in South Sudan with 16,000 enrolled students (as of 2010).

history

The University of Juba was founded in 1977 after the end of the first civil war in South Sudan in the city of Juba in South Sudan to train specialists for the development of South Sudan and to reduce the backwardness of the region.

In 1989 the university was relocated to Khartoum for security reasons , as the civil war had broken out again in South Sudan since 1982.

In 2002 the facilities on the al-Kaduro campus in Khartoum North were merged.

On February 11, 2006, 200 students who called for the university to be relocated back to Juba were arrested after clashing with the police. On April 8, 2006, students refused to take the exam and again requested relocation. The Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM for short), which provides the autonomous regional government of South Sudan, then also called for the country to be relocated back to the south. To achieve this goal, the SPLM government commissioned the repair of the university buildings in Juba. The work should be completed in the course of 2007.
