The National Library of Mozambique ( Portuguese Biblioteca Nacional de Moçambique ) in the Mozambican capital Maputo is the national library and the largest and most important library in the country. It has its seat at Avenida 25 de Setembro number 1348.
history
The National Library was established by the Portuguese colonial administration by law of August 28, 1961, as the recipient of the deposit copy of the Mozambique colony. It was housed in a building erected in 1907 that was originally used by the Portuguese Ministry of Finance.
After the People's Republic of Mozambique declared independence in 1975, the library had to cease operations due to the flight of a large part of its staff. In 1978 the National Library was reopened as an authority within the Ministry of Culture.
tasks
In addition to its function as the recipient of the deposit copies in Mozambique, it is also the supreme authority of the Serviço Nacional de Bibliotecas , the state library network. She is jointly responsible for the construction and maintenance of the public libraries in the capitals of the eleven provinces of Mozambique and the 44 municipal libraries in the country.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the National Library has to ensure the acquisition, preservation and availability of all documents from Mozambique, relating to Mozambique and in the interest of Mozambique, as well as the bibliography of global culture.
The tasks of the National Library include
- promoting public libraries and their activities,
- keeping statistics on usage figures and library buildings,
- the digitization of stocks,
- the administration of the Mozambican deposit copies and
- their electronic availability in all public libraries
structure
The management is subordinate to the director, who is assigned an adjutant. They are subordinate to three main departments.
- The Department of Technology and Training ( Departamento Técnico e de Formação ) has two sub-departments (for Planning and Training and for Information Technology and Communication).
- The Department of Preservation and Conservation ( Departamento de Preservação e Conservação ) has two sub-departments (for Conservation and Conservation and for Restoration ).
- The Administration and Finance Department ( Repartição de Administração e Finanças ) has a sub-department, the General Secretariat.
In turn, the director is subordinate to the Ministry of Culture.
