The National Library of Cape Verde ( Portuguese Biblioteca Nacional de Cabo Verde ) is the national library and the largest and most important library of the West African island republic of Cape Verde . It is located in the capital Praia , opposite the National Stadium Estádio da Várzea .
history
The first two public libraries in what was then the Portuguese colony of Cape Verde came into being at the end of the 19th century with the Biblioteca e Museu Nacional in Praia and the municipal library ( Biblioteca municipal ) in Mindelo in 1880.
After the country gained independence from Portugal (1975), specialized libraries such as those of the National Assembly , various ministries and cultural centers, and the Cape Verdean Central Bank emerged in the 1980s . In 1996, the Rede Bibliográfica da Lusofonia library program (“ Lusophonie Library Network ”) began as part of Portuguese development cooperation with the African countries with Portuguese as the official language (PALOP). It included library buildings and renovations, further training for librarians and increasing the number of books.
The National Library of Cape Verde was founded in 1999 as part of the 1997 restructuring of the government's cultural work. It replaced the Instituto Cabo-Verdiano do Livro , which was dissolved in 1997 , the state institute for books.
tasks
The Cape Verdean state has defined three basic tasks for the Biblioteca Nacional de Cabo Verde:
- It is the recipient of the Cape Verdean deposit copy and the classical national library of the Republic of Cape Verde
- It is the public library of the capital Praia
- It is the state authority to promote reading in the country. Her duties in this context also include her work as a publisher. In addition, she works in cooperation with the libraries of the Cape Verdean district administrations ( Bibliotecas municipais ) on the development of the state library network, the Rede Nacional das Bibliotecas Públicas . For this purpose, the database of the national library holdings will be created in the national library ( Base Nacional de Dados Bibliográficos ).
