history

Campus of the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisa

The Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisa was founded in 1984 by Carlos Lopes. It is located on the “Complexo Escolar 14 de November”, an educational campus that also houses the National School of Health ( Escola Nacional de Saúde ), the Universidade Lusófona da Guiné (formerly Universidade Amílcar Cabral ) and the Bissau Law Faculty ( Faculdade de Direito Bissau ) houses. INEP Bissau was founded as a social science research institute to promote scientific research on Guinea-Bissau. Right from the start, it received great support from foreign donor organizations and quickly developed into a recognized research center that also became known beyond the borders of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. From 1998 to 2004 Carlos Cardoso headed the INEP Bissau. During the conflict on June 7th, 1998 , INEP Bissau was occupied by Senegalese troops who devastated the library and archives. Large parts of the holdings of the library and the National Historical Archives were irrevocably destroyed. The buildings also suffered considerable damage during the war. The restoration measures of the institute and in particular of the library and the archives lasted over ten years and could only be completed in 2009.

Organizational structure

Research departments

In terms of organization, INEP is divided into four different research departments:

  • Centro de Estudos de História e Antropologia (CEHA)
  • Centro de Estudos Socioeconómicos (CESE)
  • Centro de Estudos Ambientais e Tecnologia Apropriada (CEATA)
  • Gabinete de Estudos e Projectos (GEP)
  • Centro de Documentação e Publicações (CEDOP)

Library

A public library ( Biblioteca Pública , BP) with around 70,000 titles and the national historical archives (Arquivos Históricos Nacionais, AHN) are affiliated to INEP.

The BP was founded in 1984 and took over the holdings of the library of the former Portuguese colony Portuguese Guinea (until 1973/75). The BP has since acted as the national library of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. It is responsible for national legal deposit law and is the only global documentation center in the country. It is also the university library in particular of the neighboring Universidade Lusófona da Guiné (formerly Universidade Amílcar Cabral ) and the most important public library in the country.

The library has three departments: periodicals , monographs and publications from the colonial era.

Tasks of the institute

INEP Bissau is an interdisciplinary research center and conducts research on its own initiative or on behalf of public or private institutions in the fields of history, ethnology, social, economic and natural sciences. It supports the government in formulating and implementing an overall scientific strategy for the country. It is responsible for making available and collecting scientific documents related to Guinea-Bissau. In addition, it promotes national and international exchange between the educational and research institutions of Guinea-Bissau by, among other things, facilitating advanced training and exchange programs in cooperation with national and international institutions.
