The Marburg University Choir is today a mixed choir that is structurally independent from the Philipps University of Marburg and consists of around 80 members, most of whom are students at Phillips University. The “Academic Choral Society” had been in existence since 1845 under the direction of the respective university music director, and from 1930 a Collegium Musicum at the Musicological Institute. After its dissolution, it was re-founded in its current form in 1989 by students at the Philipps University in Marburg. According to its mission statement, the main focus of the musical work of the university choir is the rediscovery and performance of little or no known demanding a cappella compositions. The University Choir of Marburg made a major contribution to the renaissance of choral music by Wilhelm Berger or Georg Schumann .

history

As early as the second half of the 19th century, the orchestra and choir of the Philipps University of Marburg formed under the direction of the University Music Director , initially organized independently in the form of the “Academic Concert Association”. An important director of the university choir was Johannes Brahms' only student, Gustav Jenner , who was appointed Academic Music Director of the University of Marburg (University Music Director ) from 1895 . Jenner's successor, the musicologist Hermann Stephani, founded the Collegium musicum and reorganized the choir. Further university music directors were Prof. Kurt Utz and Prof. Martin Weyer . Weyer presented several world premieres with the university's choir and orchestra, including works by Joachim Blume, Wolfgang Stockmeier and Alan Gibbs.

After Weyer gave up the university's own choir in 1979, a new university choir independent of Philipps University was founded in 1989 on the initiative of students. The choir was led by the church musician and musicologist Wolfgang Schult from Dillenburg . Since the 2013/2014 winter semester, the university choir has been under the direction of Marburg district cantor Nils Kuppe.

repertoire

In contrast to many other university choirs in Germany that are part of a musicological institute or a university Collegium Musicum and rather perform choral symphonic works, the Marburg University Choir almost exclusively performs secular and sacred a cappella works. The focus here is on the rediscovery of relatively unknown composers from all epochs. Shaped by the musicological work of the choir director Wolfgang Schult, the university choir occasionally performed pieces that have never been played again since their premiere, such as the Goethe poem Der Totentanz (op.86), set to music by Wilhelm Berger in 1902, in 2013 was only performed in Berlin (ur) or the Crucifixus by Arnold Krug , which was premiered in 2002 by the Marburg University Choir.

The Marburg University Choir made a major contribution to the current renaissance of Wilhelm Berger's choral works, which is documented by various CD recordings. Schult studied Berger's estate archive in the Meiningen museums and began to present all important works to the public with the university choir. Berger's works have been on the choir's program almost every semester since 2001.

Recurring composers who have shaped the university choir include Wilhelm Berger u. a. Giacomo Meyerbeer , Edward Elgar , Georg Schumann , Ferdinand Thieriot , Ernst Friedrich Richter and Petr Eben . The almost completely unknown composers include Christian Theodor Weinlig , Alexander Ritter , Reinhold Succo , Adalbert Überlee and Samuel Webbe .

The program of the Marburg University Choir also includes larger projects with symphony orchestras at random intervals. So the choir in 1999 with the Kurpfälzische Philharmonic Mannheim was the performance of Edward Elgar's oratorio for the tenth anniversary The Dream of Gerontius , or in February 2013 together with the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Festival Dill the Totentanz by Wilhelm Berger and the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms realized . In January 2017, the university choir performed seldom performed late romantic works together with the Young Marburg Philharmonic . In the summer semester 2018, a commissioned composition by the German composer Thomas Emanuel Cornelius ( Stille Wasser Leben ) was part of the concert program.

Concert tours

The Marburg University Choir performs in well-known churches and concert venues nationwide at regular intervals. As the musical ambassador for the city of Marburg and the Philipps University, he has already taken numerous concert tours to German cities and other European countries (France, Italy). For example, the university choir has been a guest several times in the Marburg twin city Poitiers (most recently in 2010). In 2014 the university choir performed as part of its concert tour in Cologne Cathedral , as well as in Koblenz's Florinskirche ; In 2016 he went on a concert tour to northern Germany, where the program included appearances in the Hamburg Michel , the Mariendom , the Bremen Cathedral , the Bremen Liebfrauenkirche and the Verden Cathedral . The 2018 concert tour went to East Germany, where the university choir performed in the Dresden Frauenkirche , the Meißen Cathedral , the Leipzig Thomaskirche and the Marktkirche in Halle .

Sound carrier

In November 2016 it was published under the title … how is the world so beautiful! the first CD of the Marburg University Choir. According to his model, mainly unknown compositions by Wilhelm Berger, Georg Schumann, Ernst Friedrich Richter and others were recorded. The choral works Da Israel aus Egypt (Ernst Friedrich Richter), An der Natur ( Ferdinand von Hiller ), Goldne Brücken (Johannes Brahms), Postillions Morgenlied (Johannes Brahms) and Die Awaken Rose (Wilhelm Berger) were recorded on this CD for the first time released.

organization

The university choir is a structurally independent, student-sponsored association of the Philipps University of Marburg and is organized in the form of a registered, non-profit association. Organizational management is provided by a volunteer student choir board. The university choir has been a member of the German Choir Association since 2013 . There is a cooperation with the Musicological Institute of the Philipps University.
