The Lower Kachura Lake , also officially called Shangri-La Lake since 1983 , is, together with the Upper Kachura Lake, one of the two Kachura Lakes in Skardu ( Gilgit-Baltistan Special Territory , Pakistan ).
Surname
At the lake is the Shangri-La Resorts Skardu , a famous luxury hotel complex . The resort , whose name means “heaven on earth”, has, among other things, a restaurant in the fuselage of a crashed airplane. This Douglas DC-3 of the Orient Airways proposed on 13 October 1950 three minutes after the start near the lake on. The entire crew and passengers survived the crash; among them was the writer James Albert Michener . Inspired by the novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton , in which the survivors of a plane crash arrive in the heavenly and legendary town of Shangri-La , residents of Skardu drew parallels and have since referred to Lower Kachura Lake as Shangri-La Lake.
particularities
The mountain lake has pure, transparent water, the temperature of which reaches a maximum of 15 ° C in summer and freezes completely in winter. It is 2,319 meters above sea level . Due to its location in the mountains, the lake has a temperate climate with little rainfall in summer. From April to October the daytime temperatures drop up to 27 ° C (April) to daily values not above 8 ° C (October). Between December and January, temperatures below −10 ° C are normal, with minimum values of −25 ° C being reached.
The normal road connection from the lake to Skardu runs through the Skardu Valley via a road that branches off from the Karakoram Highway . During the winter months, like Skardu, the lake is often cut off from the outside world for several weeks due to avalanches of buried roads. Small planes and helicopters provide the only connection during this period. The accommodations in the area are popular starting points or base camps for trekking tours and expeditions to the eight-thousanders .
