The underpass Hallische Straße is a listed bridge and wall in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in the eastern half of Hallische Strasse and in the southern part of Bahnhofsstrasse in Magdeburg's old town .

Design and history

The underpass serves as a street underpass for Hallische Strasse under the Magdeburg – Leipzig railway line . At that time, the Hallische Strasse, Hasselbachplatz did not yet exist in its present form, was the main road leading from the south towards Halle (Saale) into the Magdeburg Fortress . The area around the underpass was particularly difficult in terms of urban development, as the Braunschweig – Magdeburg railway joins a little further north , coming from the west, creating a triangle of tracks .

The attachment of the dam was built in the period 1870-1872 from großgliedrigem stone ashlar masonry . The abutments of the bridge in the area of the railroad crossing are covered in the same way. The bridge itself is designed as a track-wise trough bridge , the trusses of which are located next to each other in the form of a cascade. Similar constructions existed on other railway bridges in the city.

The approximately six meter high retaining wall was built from red sandstone on a lighter, contrasting, embossed base. A cornice cover rests on the wall . At the end of the 19th century the railway embankment was built. A perforated parapet wall in a balustrade-like design made of yellow bricks was placed on the cornice of the retaining masonry .

From the railway crossing on the north side of Hallische Strasse, the retaining wall runs about 110 meters to the east in the direction of Hasselbachplatz. There is a large opening in the wall at the junction there with Bahnhofstrasse. On the other side of the opening, the retaining wall continues northwards for around 30 meters west along Bahnhofstrasse. On the south side of Hallische Strasse, the retaining wall only exists up to about 30 meters east of the railway crossing.

In the local register of monuments , the underpass is listed as a monument under registration number 094 71166 . Presumably by mistake, the underpass is also isolated for the section in Bahnhofstrasse with registration number 094 71176.

The underpass is considered to be historically, technically and economically and town-planning significant. It was registered as a monument on November 17, 2000.
